Ruth Halevy
Ruth Halevy (b. 1969, Tel Aviv) works at the intersection of installation, archive and the discipline of the museum. Trained in Jerusalem and London, she emerged in the late 1990s as one of the most rigorous Israeli voices working in the long aftermath of conceptualism, building works that resemble nothing so much as a collection assembled by an institution that has forgotten its own purpose. Her vitrines, shelves and floor arrangements gather grey found objects, archival boxes, plaster casts of domestic things, pressed paper, folded cloth and ordered documents, all drained toward a single dust-toned register. Nothing is dramatised; everything is filed. The effect is at once tender and forensic, a system of care applied to objects that have lost their names. Halevy has spoken of the archive as a form of mourning that does not announce itself, and her tableaux hold memory at the precise distance of a label seen through glass. Working between Tel Aviv and exhibitions across Europe, she has built a body of work that withholds as much as it records. She has been associated with Brunner & Sand since 2016, and continues to live and work in Tel Aviv.
I arrange things until they stop asking to be looked at and begin, instead, to be kept. A folded cloth, a box, a cast of a spoon: these are not metaphors, they are evidence held without a verdict. What survives is rarely the object. It is the dust, the order, the quiet of having been put away.
